New Music Monday #3 - Jane’s Party
It may be past midnight where I am, but it’s still Monday somewhere in the world.
Okay, so this is a very last-minute discovery—literally I learned about them only a minute ago—and I had trouble deciding what band to feature this week (read: I couldn’t think of one, even though I have a list.) This is an appropriate find though, since I was going to feature their buddies The Elwins sometime soon. I feel like I can now kill two birds with one stone, but I won’t; I’ll discuss The Elwins next week!
How I learned about Jane’s Party (just now): You know that creepy “Activity” feed on Twitter where you can see what the people you are following are doing? i.e. Who they just followed, what tweet they just favourited, etc. Well, I noticed someone (I think TJ from Dear Photograph) following someone new with my first name in the username. I got curious. How vain of me—for the Twitter handle to have caught my eye because my name’s in there. Sigh.
Another coincidence/coinkydoink: So after venturing to the Jane’s Party Twitter page and then to their website, the first blog post I read on their website is of their visit to Q107 last week. They played an acoustic set at the station the day before they played with The Elwins at The Piston for their tour launch party. I. Wanted. To. Go. To. That. Show! But that was the night when everything, and I mean everything, was happening (SamprasvsRaonic + TeganandSaraScreening + MyWeekwithMarilynScreening + etcetcetc.)
Their visit (full session available here) included acoustic Neil Young and Pink Floyd covers as well as an original tune called “What You Believe In”. The guys (namely Devon, Zack, Jeff and Tom) sound absolutely spot-on with their three-part harmony and collection of instruments. It’s been surprising to me how many local (Toronto OR GTA) bands I have been discovering lately. These guys sound great and I love their style. And with a band name like Jane’s Party, they honestly can’t go wrong. I guess it’s time for me to throw a party (in my head) and blast their tracks on full volume this week!
And how fun is the YouTube video I posted at the top? Hello, Toronto!

New Music Monday highlights my favourite new musical discoveries. The series will encourage me to actively seek new music and (hopefully) encourage others to open their ears to something new. Got a recommendation? Write me!
