A floormate from my first year of residence at university wrote me this message yesterday. We last exchanged Facebook messages almost two months ago, and before that, we hadn’t spoken for five years. I had told her briefly about my job as an Interactive Manager in TV in my January message. Funny how our brains and the subconscious work right?
I’ll take this as a sign.
It’s the middle of the night of a crazy-busy weekend, and I am exhausted from attending two concerts two nights in a row, but I have been itching to write for so long. This blog entry is long overdue, and I wish to update it and everyone (right now) on my last three months.
Since May, I have been working for Corus Entertainment as an intern for Movie Central and the Interactive department. My role is to produce content for and assist in the maintenance of three websites—of the three movie-specialty television stations: Movie Central, Encore Avenue and Scream.
My internship is especially exciting because I have the pleasure of being a part of two website relaunches and station rebrands: MC recently re-launched with a new logo and new website; Scream will soon—on 09/09/09—become Dusk, and a new site will be launched. With all the anticipation and challenges, my internship has been a hell of a blast. I have been kept very, very, very busy—just the way I like it—and feel very much a part of the company.
With the MC re-launch came a new section for the television station’s website called Central+. Central+ is the interactive/community section where members can test their knowledge with actor/actress/movie/TV series-specific trivia, give their opinion in polls, and read our staff blog called Off The Reel.
Three days ago, I finally published my first entry to Off The Reel. Between now and September 10, I will be writing weekly as Toronto counts down to the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. I will showcase films playing on MC that have been previously featured at TIFF.
I’m really excited to be writing again, and I look forward to comments and feedback. Check it out and let me know what you think! I also hope that, in addition to my blog entries at work, I will be writing in my personal blog more regularly!
Tourism Queensland’s Great Barrier Reefs just found its Island Caretaker two days ago. Ben S. from England is now the guy with “The Best Job in the World.” The contest attracted the attention of the press and job seekers worldwide, resulting in millions of applications, causing the website to go down several times the first week of the contest announcement. Many other companies followed suit and created contests of their own in search of a new employee, and more commonly, an intern.
Why interns? Interns are cheap labour, someone who (likely) doesn’t yet have a lot of experience, and can be manipulated moulded to the company’s culture and expectations. I have nothing against internships: I have just recently begun my internship with a large Canadian entertainment conglomerate and am loving my job and everything about it. There’s tons to learn, and internships help students and recent graduates really get to know the industry.
Check out my public relations and marketing blog, PR&Brand for a new blog post I just wrote about several dreams jobs and the best jobs in the world that have recently popped up. It’s all thanks to the social media culture and our obsessions with Facebook, Twitter, blogs, consumer infantilization, and more. Gotta love Internet culture.
